BRAC tops discussion during town hall – Stripe – December 18, 2008

Construction at NNMC in Bethesda – BRAC construction at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda is underway. Various departments are relocating temporarily because of construction, and patient parking is more limited. During NNMC construction, Pax River patients are encouraged to use the free NAS Pax base shuttle which departs the Naval Health Clinic twice daily to and from NNMC. Pediatric Swing Space: The units for this new swing space are scheduled to arrive in early January. Ten 60 ft. units will be located alongside Building 10 once completed. The units will be staged on the front lawn area from Jan. 5 through Jan. 8, while underground utilities and foundation are completed. Placement of the units will begin Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. and will be completed by Jan. 11 at 6 a.m. During this time, access to Brown Drive, from South Palmer Road, will be closed. More information regarding this project will be provided in the coming weeks....

Holiday party helps brighten spirits of WRAMC children fighting cancer – Stripe – Dec 11, 2008
From jets to military working dogs, a turkey dinner to music, the annual Christmas party hosted by Andrews Air Force Base brightened the lives of many pediatric oncology patients from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, their parents and siblings, Saturday. Held for the last 21 years, the festivities give the young patients the opportunity to enjoy themselves among friends, family, doctors, and other people who have cancer. This year, 70 families and 133 kids (including siblings) participated.

Dr. S. Ward Casscells has served as assistant secretary of defense for health affairs since April 16, 2007. Previously, he was Tyson Distinguished Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) and Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas, and director of clinical research at the Texas Heart Institute. He provided assistance after disasters including the Oklahoma City bombing, the Tokyo sarin gas attack and the South Asian tsunami. Casscells joined the Army Reserve in 2005 at age 53, and assisted with response to Hurricane Katrina, with preparedness for avian influenza, and as liaison between Multinational Force-Iraq and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalizad. He recently spoke with the U.S. Army Medical Command Mercury newspaper while in San Antonio, Texas, to attend meetings of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States and the Pan-American Committee of Military Medicine....

Clark Construction, a partner of the joint venture, Clark?Balfour?Beatty the builder of the future Walter Reed National Military Medical Center erected the first of three tower cranes over the Columbus Day weekend. According to Robert Bowers, who oversees all of Clark’s tower crane erections and dismantling, this is the 21st crane erected by Clark in 2008. The tower crane stands nearly 168 feet above ground level and will be used primarily, to haul and place concrete and to move items around the site....

Aeromedical Staging Facility renovated, 79 MDG renamed – The Capital Flyer – Oct 16, 2008
In an inactivation, activation and ribbon cutting ceremony, the Aeromedical Staging Facility stood down with the inactivation of the 79th Medical Group and reopened its doors as a part of the 779th Medical Group Oct. 9. ‘‘It’s a change in label, but not in purpose,” said Maj. Gen. Gar S. Graham, 79th Medical Wing commander. ‘‘To reduce confusion, the organization known as the 79th Medical Group became the 779th Medical Group. The renumbering makes a clearer distinction between the wing organization and the two medical groups that operate at Andrews and Bolling Air Force Base....”

Bethesda rolls out Computerized Physician Order Entry system – The Journal – Oct 16, 2008
In its constant efforts to keep pace with the cutting edge of medical technology, the National Naval Medical Center rolled out phase one of the Computerized Physician Order Entry system. ‘‘CPOE is a process of electronic entry of medical providers’ instructions for the treatment of patients under their care,” said National Naval Medical Center Commander Rear Adm. Matthew Nathan. ‘‘These computerized orders are transferred to staff (nurses, therapists, pharmacists) and departments (laboratory, radiology) responsible for completing the orders and treatment instructions....”

In total there are 40 modular units that will eventually construct a two-story facility. The units will arrive through the University Road gate off of Jones Bridge Road, staged in designated areas of the Navy Exchange parking lot, and then placed and assembled by a crane. Depending on potential delays (i.e., weather), it is expected that movement of the units will be conducted during the week....

The Joint Task Force National Capital Region—Medical (JTF CapMed) continues to evolve and define their role in both today’s and tomorrow’s medical operations in the National Capital Area. It will serve as a repository of valuable information and a symbolic tour of the voyage that started in September, 2005....

A Warrior went to the SFAC for an umbrella, but received an unprofessional response.
A: There are numerous programs provided to Warriors by private non-profit organizations. Some provide their services (to include financial assistance) to Warriors indirectly through the SFAC. Such charitable help doesn’t necessarily flow to Warriors just by their knowing about them, but rather by an established need that fits the organization's mission. As it happens, Warriors and their Family members receive generous amounts of donations in all forms….
